TECHNICAL SNAPSHOT VERSION HISTORY For Public Release Please understand that Technical Snapshot is constantly being updated to recognize the newest technology, display the most accurate values, and meet the needs of our customers. We're not shy about releasing new versions as often as possible. v2.0.2 99/04/18 * Technical Snapshot is now a registered trademark. * Simplified contact information for Storm Impact, Inc. * Vendors and support organizations can now add their logo and name to the start-up screen and about box. In addition, a license number can be built-in so that recipients don't have to enter a registration number. If interested, contact Storm Impact for distribution rights. * Changed "personal check" to just "check" in the Order Form since corporate or company checks are also acceptable. * Removed the CD-ROM checkbox from the Order Form and added a note reaffirming that the user won't receive a disk in the mail. * Long filenames no longer wrap to the next line on snapshots, because only the top pixels were visible. * In the ADB Peripherals section, certain copy protection dongles and Wacom tablets are now identified. In addition, Apple's standard USB keyboard is recognized. * In the Computer section, the iMac as well as other recent computers are now identified by Model name. Also, the PowerPC G3 and other recent CPUs are now identified by name. * In the Disks section, CD-ROMs are now listed as 100% used. * Known limitation: In the Disks section, disks larger than 2GB are only displayed as 2GB and the percentage used is inaccurate. Although not incompatible, Technical Snapshot doesn't support or accurately display any HFS+ (Mac OS Extended) attributes. An example of this is the file Size on disk, which is listed as larger than it actually is on HFS+ disks. * In the Info section, the application specified in Kind is now always the most recent. * In the Extensions section, Claris Corporation files are now marked with an Apple. Also, recognition of system files as being from Apple (such as System Enabler 462) has been improved. * In the Extensions section, color is available after registration without having to quit and rerun Technical Snapshot. * In the Extensions section, system enablers are no longer ever labeled with "duplicate" since some MacOS installs contain system enablers for multiple models. * In the Extensions section, the Mac OS ROM and System Resources files are now listed. * In the Extensions section, control panel applications (such as Desktop Pictures and Energy Saver) are now listed as disabled instead of "wrong location?" if they aren't in the Control Panels folder. v2.0.1 97/08/19 * Storm Impact is now a registered trademark. * Fixed a conflict between ScanTasticAccess and Technical Snapshot that caused Technical Snapshot to crash when the Snapshot button was pressed. * Registered users with a Ô7', Ô8', or Ô9' in their registration number were having to reenter their registration number every time they ran Technical Snapshot. The registration number is now properly read from the preferences file. Sorry about that! * An unregistered user was concerned that the number of potential problems referred to in the Advice section didn't vary no matter what file he focused on. This was because all the files he focused on were fine, but the problems found each time were general or related to the system. To prevent doubts regarding Technical Snapshots merits, unregistered users are now told how many "focus" problems and how many general problems were found. (Registered users always see a complete description of each problem.) * If virtual memory is turned on, the virtual memory fields in the Disks and Memory sections are now highlighted blue. Previously, the Memory Manager Software field was inadvertently highlighted instead. * In the ADB Peripherals section, any Apple 850AV controls, Suncom SFX Plus pads, or CalComp tablets are now listed by name, instead of as generic "ADB peripheral type". * In the Extensions section, invisible Kensington MouseWorks files or invisible Adobe font suitcases are no longer highlighted in red, because it's usual for them to be invisible. * In the Extensions section, shared and Java libraries are no longer listed as disabled, no matter what folder they reside in. Because the proper location of a library is now determined by the third-party that installed it, it's no longer possible to determine if a library has been moved from the correct subfolder. * Starting with System 8, versions of Super Boomerang v6.x and older intermittently crash the Finder when the Finder tries to open a window (get info, copy, open, and so on). Technical Snapshot now lists those versions of Super Boomerang as UNSTABLE in the Extensions section. * In the Extensions section, color is no longer displayed for unregistered users. * In the Parameter RAM section, color is no longer displayed for unregistered users. v2.0 97/08/14 Major Upgrade! * Added an Advice section. * Faster! Especially scrolling a newly created snapshot through the Extensions section. * Accelerated on PowerPCs! * On color monitors, red highlights significant problems and blue highlights aliases or notable items. In the Extensions section, gray highlights disabled extensions. * The Reference Notebook has been built into the application. * Built in a context sensitive glossary. Clicking on a field in a snapshot opens a corresponding Notebook page. * The popup menu in the window's title (hold down the command key and click the window title) now shows the location of Technical Snapshot on the disk whenever appropriate. Also, the menu is nudged a few pixels in System 8 in order to popup directly over the window title. * The contents of a window are now updated while scrolling by dragging of the "elevator" control on the scroll bar. This feature is only for PowerPC-based CPUs, because older processors are unable to update the window in a reasonable amount of time. * Help & Shortcuts in the File menu, is now in color. * When text is copied from a picture, a blank line is inserted between blocks of text that are vertically separated by a distance of one or more text lines. In other words, copied text has more white space where appropriate. * Opening a picture document that has no data will display an appropriate error message. * Launching Technical Snapshot by double-clicking a document from the Finder in systems prior to System 7 will now cause the document to open when Technical Snapshot starts up. * The virus alert is now properly centered on 9-inch monitors running systems prior to System 7. * In System 7 and up, the cursor won't be set if Technical Snapshot is in the background. * In the ADB Peripherals section, it is noted if no devices are found. * In the ADB Peripherals section, Suncom joysticks are now listed by name. * In the Computer section, "68040 (Quadra AV)" is listed for CPU on Quadra AVs with a particular ROM bug and particular system software. * In the Disks section, the capacity of 1GB and 2GB drives are rounded up if within 5% of a gigabyte. * Small MacOS volume CD-ROMs are almost indistinguishable from locked, removable cartridges. In the Disks section, Technical Snapshot's identification is now accurate if the CD-ROM is mounted by the Apple CD driver. * In the Info section, a modified date of zero is now listed as "never" instead of 1904. * In the Info section, a greater variety of file kinds are recognized. * In the Info section, default help text is displayed for a select group of extensions and documents, but only if no help text can be read from them directly. * While checksumming the focus file during the creation of a snapshot, the text above the progress bar now reads "Reading entire file". * The virtual memory storage file, "VM Storage", is no longer read for checksumming in the Data Checksum of the Integrity section. Not only does this save a lot of time, but the checksum results were of no value anyway. * When the option key is held down as Technical Snapshot starts up, the Extensions section now lists both the Type and Creator for every file, unless a more important message takes precedence (like disabled, alias, locked, or so on). * When the option key is held down as Technical Snapshot starts up, the Extensions section resolves aliases and scans their contents, now noting as "broken" any aliases which have become disconnected from their original file. * In the Extensions section, sounds related to the "Pythonizer" control panel are now ignored. The Pythonizer sounds have an improper Type and Creator that is identical to the System file. * In the Extensions section, OpenDoc extensions and Multiprocessing extensions are no longer listed as disabled if they are in the OpenDoc Libraries folder or Multiprocessing folder. * In the Extensions section, all locked files are listed, and any invisible files not specifically known to Technical Snapshot. * Help, in the Info section, can now be read from the file's balloon help resource that the Finder uses, even if that resource has an incorrect value calculated for bytes remaining. * A few Macintosh model names have been added or edited. * Parameter RAM: Defaults to zero for any value that can't be read. * If the model of computer has the kind of Parameter RAM that Technical Snapshot can't read (such as the PowerBook 5300), it is now noted as such. * The alarm clock time is followed by the word "off" or "on" in Parameter RAM section. * When keyboard autorepeat is turned off, the Initial Delay Until Key Repeat now reads as "off" in Parameter RAM section. * in Parameter RAM section, the Network Zone Name must be 31 characters in length or less, not 32. * Parameter RAM: An alert sound resource ID of 0 is now described as "system beep". * A Disk/RAM Cache which is too high or too low is noted as unusual in Parameter RAM section. * A manufactured date older than 1984 is noted as unusual in Parameter RAM section. * In the Preferences section, if the "focus" of the snapshot is the preferences file, all of the fields in the Preferences section will now contain "n/a". * If the creator of the "focus" of the snapshot is Ô????' or zero, Technical Snapshot won't bother searching for a preferences file, and all of the fields in the Preferences section will contain "n/a". * Internet email addresses are listed first in the Publisher section. Also, the previous titles, "E-Mail", have changed to "Email". v1.1.2 97/01/17 * Technical Snapshot now identifies the PowerPC 604e CPU. * Removable cartridges are now correctly identified in the Disks section. * If the user or a utility have removed an application's PowerPC code only from the data fork (leaving a false ' cfrg' resource behind), the PowerPC Memory Note and Accelerated On PowerPC fields no longer consider the application to be PowerPC accelerated. * Parameter RAM: The Application Font is appropriately noted if missing from the System. * If Technical Snapshot is damaged and the user clicks the Quit button, the licensing promotion alert no longer appears before quitting. * Updated the Storm Impact contact information. v1.1.1 96/12/18 * Starting with System 7.1, versions of Super Boomerang prior to v4.0 crash if the user tries to open or save in a program using new standard file dialogs. Technical Snapshot now switches itself down to old standard file dialogs if pre-4.0 versions of Super Boomerang, or any version of Desktop Shortcut, are installed. * Versions of Super Boomerang prior to v4.0 and Global Village Toolbox prior to v2.1.5 are now noted as UNSTABLE in the Extensions section of a snapshot. v1.1 96/12/16 * PowerBooks no longer cycle down their CPU speed during Smaller Save As. * If a damaged picture or text document is opened, an error dialog displays a description of the damage to the Resources Structure. * Picture or text documents which are damaged, or are smaller than the minimum window size, no longer open or zoom to a window size which is smaller than the minimum. * Unlicensed copies of Technical Snapshot now display an attention dialog at startup. * The licensee code now appears after the Technical Snapshot version number and attention text appears after the table of contents in the snapshot. v1.0.3 96/10/07 * Fixed a crash (unimplemented instruction) on PowerBooks running pre-7.5 systems. * AtEase, which can intercept the launch of the Finder, caused the Finder to be noted as "duplicate" in the Extensions section. The new term in those cases is "secondary". * In the Extensions section, skipped aliases have only the note "alias" following them, not "disabled" or anything else. If the alias is skipped, it obviously can't be determined if the target of the alias is disabled or not. * Parameter RAM: Corrected the number of colors shown for the Performa 6214CD's built-in video. The number of colors was correct in the video section, just not in the parameter RAM section. * Parameter RAM: Added the PowerBook 160's built-in video. * The QuickDraw GX version information for the Printer Manager Software is now displayed correctly. Note: The displayed version number comes from the internal (gestalt) version number, and does not always match the extension file version number. * Made it easier change the about box for individual licensees. v1.0.2 96/10/02 * The PowerBook 5300 series keyboard is now recognized in the ADB Peripherals section. * The end of the AppleTalk Software field now displays "OpenTransport" or "MacTCP vX.X" if either is active. * The 603e CPU on the Performa 6400 (and high speed 5400) was incorrectly described as a 604e. It is now listed as 603e* (with an asterisk), because the high speed 603e is actually a different chip than the lower speed 603e. * The clock speed of the PowerBook 5300/100 series CPU is now rounded up from 99mhz to 100mhz. * To make occurrences of it more noticeable, the word "damaged!" has been changed to all uppercase in the Extensions section. * A few Macintosh model names have been added or altered. * Parameter RAM: Wait For Startup Disk is now displayed correctly if set to 0 or 1 even if high bits (>= bit 5) are set. * Parameter RAM: The contents of bytes 222 and 223 were incorrectly being displayed as "undocumented" even though they were actually documented elsewhere in the Parameter RAM section. * Parameter RAM: Corrupted Parameter RAM sometimes resulted in end-of-line or tab characters appearing within the Setting column of the Slot Resources Note or NuMc Or Bugs fields. As the section was alphabetized, the extraneous characters appeared on the wrong lines. v1.0.1 96/09/30 * 'mdev' extensions, such as FreePPP, are now listed in the Extensions section. * Parameter RAM: Wait For Startup Disk is a value between 1 and 31 seconds. Previously, the bits were not being masked to that range, so values of up to 255 seconds could have been displayed. * The hand cursor now "clenches" when manually scrolling a snapshot, just like it has always done when scrolling pictures. * The color "clenching" hand cursor now has the same hotspot as the unclenched hand. v1.0 96/09/13
